Rockford DCCW reaches out to Peruvian Women

In the fall of 2001 the Rockford Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) received a package filled with samples of beautiful handmade articles produced by a women's workshop sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy in Chulucanas, Peru. Bishop Daniel Turley, OSA, who heads the Peruvian diocese, had suggested the sisters send a box of samples asking the Rockford DCCW to sell items from the workshop.

They decided to try.

Since October 2001 the Rockford DCCW have sent $12,588 to support the women in the workshop, providing supplementary income for 45 families in Chulucanas. Some 25 women work at home, crocheting purses and embroidering blouses and T-shirts. Another 20 work at the workshop headquarters, called CEO (pronounced say-o) Betania adding lining to the purses and sewing other items by machine. The results are stunning.

Following a conversation with the Rockford DCCW member who initiated and still organizes the sale of these items, CatholicFamilyGifts.com decided to adopt several of the products of the workshop as “Mission” items. As a mission item, all proceeds from the sale of the items go to support the ministry of the Church and the Mission community that created the item.
